About
Affinity U is a dedicated community for undergraduate and graduate students of the global majority enrolled in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) programs. Our group was established to provide a supportive space where students can share experiences, access resources, and receive the advocacy they need to succeed academically and personally.
Recognizing the unique challenges and inequities faced by students of color in CSD programs, we are committed to addressing issues of attrition and underrepresentation in the field. Our group offers peer support, professional guidance, and a wealth of resources to help students navigate their academic journey and prepare for successful careers in CSD professions.
Through our collective efforts, we aim to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where every member feels valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential. Join us to connect with peers, access valuable resources, and contribute to the advancement of diversity and excellence in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Despite ASHA's expressed commitment to diversifying our profession over two decades ago, fewer than 10% of SLPs identify as a member of the global majority. Underrepresentation can lead to feelings to isolation and lack of relatable role models for students of color in CSD programs.
Students of color often face unique challenges in predominantly white institutions, including microaggressions, cultural misunderstandings, and a lack of support systems. A study by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) indicates that retention rates for students of color in higher education are lower than for their white counterparts, partly due to these challenges.
Affinity spaces provide a supportive environment where students can share experiences, receive mentorship, and develop a sense of belonging, which is crucial for retention and success. Affinity spaces can also serve as a refuge where students can discuss challenging experiences and access resources for coping and resilience.
The diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of students of color are assets to the CSD field, particularly in serving multilingual and multicultural populations. However, the lack of diversity in the profession can limit the ability to provide culturally sustaining care.
ASHA reports that the demand for bilingual SLPs is high, but only 6% of SLPs identify as bilingual service providers. An affinity space can help nurture and develop these skills, contributing to better representation and service provision in the profession.
The mental health of students of color in predominantly white academic programs can be adversely affected by experiences of racism and exclusion. Research from the American Psychological Association (APA) suggests that students of color are more likely to experience stress and mental health issues due to discrimination and lack of support
Affinity spaces offer opportunities for networking with professionals of color in the field, which is essential for career development. According to ASHA, mentorship and networking opportunities are critical factors in the career advancement of SLPs of color.
Affinity spaces provide access to scholarships, internships, and other resources that might otherwise be inaccessible for students of color.
